Georgian streets with a market in the middle
Fournier Street is the best preserved row of early Georgian houses in London, built for Huguenot silk weavers who put long attic windows in to catch the light for the looms. Elder Street and Folgate Street do the same thing on a smaller scale. At the end of Fournier Street, Christ Church Spitalfields stands with its enormous spire, a Hawksmoor building that dominates everything around it.
Old Spitalfields Market fills the block between Brushfield Street and Lamb Street under an iron roof, traders during the week and a broader crowd at weekends, with restaurants down both flanks. Brick Lane starts at the top of Fournier Street and runs north. Petticoat Lane, which is really Middlesex Street, keeps its Sunday market on the south side. The whole district can be crossed on foot in eight minutes.
Small hotels, and the City ones five minutes west
There is a townhouse hotel on Folgate Street, panelled and candlelit and thoroughly odd, with about two dozen rooms. On Commercial Street a pub keeps five rooms above it and a roof garden on top. Both are small, which suits the district.
For something larger, the house built into Liverpool Street station at EC2M 7QN is five minutes west, the High Street hotel at E1 6JQ is five minutes north, and the small rooms at EC2A 3ET are a little beyond it. We give them as addresses and nothing else; no hotel in E1 has an arrangement with this desk.
Liverpool Street in five, Shoreditch in five
Liverpool Street is a five minute walk south west from the market and brings the Central, Circle, Hammersmith and City, Metropolitan and Elizabeth lines with the main line platforms. Shoreditch High Street, on the Overground, is five minutes north. Aldgate East is seven minutes south.
Being wedged between the City and the East End is the practical advantage here: she can come in on any of those lines or by road, and the road route through the City empties out after eight. Expect her inside the hour on a weeknight and rather quicker later on. Zone 1, so the journey costs you nothing extra.
The people who book off Brushfield Street
Bankers and lawyers who have walked five minutes east to stop being at work. Visitors who booked one of the small hotels because they wanted a district rather than a chain. People with flats in the converted warehouses on Commercial Street who have lived here long enough to be irritated by the weekend crowds. They tend to want dinner as part of the evening, they book two or three days ahead, and they ask sensible questions about timing, which the desk is glad to answer.
The weekend changes the district completely. From Saturday morning the market and Brick Lane fill with people who do not live here, and residents book earlier in the day or later at night to get round it. On a Sunday evening the whole of E1 goes quiet again and it becomes the best night of the week to be here.
Thursday, eight until midnight
Four hours at £900, starting at eight. She meets you at the bar of your hotel on Folgate Street, you walk two minutes to a table on the market's east side and take your time over it, then finish with a walk up Fournier Street, which is worth doing at eleven at night when it is empty and lit and looks like 1725. Two hours at £500 covers a shorter version of the same evening without the long table. Ninety minutes at £400 is the usual after work booking, six thirty to eight.
